DESIGNING AN OASIS IN THE SENEGALESE LANDSCAPE

OKAÏ is born as an oasis in the middle of the Senegalese landscape. A place that does not seek to impose itself on its surroundings, but to blend into them with respect, calm and sensitivity. Sand, palm trees and a large sheet of water define the heart of the project, turning the space into an experience where architecture accompanies the territory rather than competing with it.

The commission arose after the disappearance of a previous camp, with the need to redefine the place from a new perspective. The challenge was clear: to create a project able to grow in phases, adapt to the local context and offer a singular experience, without losing coherence or identity. From the outset, OKAÏ is conceived as a living, flexible and constantly evolving space.

Inusual Studio’s proposal starts from an essential idea: designing for the desert means understanding its limits, its rhythm and its language. Far from imported solutions, the project is built from formal and chromatic simplicity, allowing the landscape, light and materials to be the true protagonists. The central oasis acts as the articulating axis of the whole, organising the programme and generating a simultaneous sense of refuge and openness.

Materiality is defined from resources and techniques available in the surroundings. Woods, plant fibres and local stone are combined with simple construction systems, designed to be executed by expert local hands. This decision is not only an aesthetic matter, but a conscious way of designing: making use of local know-how to create authentic, lasting spaces deeply connected to their context.

The working process was developed in close collaboration with the client and the artisans, with a constant dialogue that made it possible to adjust the project to the real possibilities of the place. OKAÏ was not designed from rigidity, but from listening and continuous adaptation, understanding each phase as an opportunity to improve and refine the whole.

The result is a hotel complex where the experience is built step by step. The arrival is restrained and serene; the impact comes on discovering the central oasis. The restaurant opens as a place for gathering and contemplation, while the rooms and tents blend organically into the landscape, offering privacy, calm and a direct connection with the natural environment.

Key aspects of the project

The project's relationship with its surroundings

OKAÏ is set respecting the topography and climatic conditions of the Senegalese desert. The project adapts to the existing landscape, using the central oasis as an organising element and creating a direct relationship between architecture, vegetation and water.

The project's relationship with its surroundings

The complex is organised flexibly, allowing growth in phases without losing overall coherence. The routes are laid out in a slow, progressive way, generating a sequential experience in which the space is discovered gradually.

Materiality as the structure of the design

The selection of materials responds to criteria of local availability, durability and climatic behaviour. Neutral tones, natural textures and simple construction systems reinforce the project’s integration into its surroundings and make it easier to build.

Craftsmanship and local know-how

The project incorporates local construction techniques and trades as an essential part of the design. More than an aesthetic resource, artisanal work is understood as a tool for building identity, authenticity and rootedness.

Design and adaptation process

OKAÏ is developed through an open, evolving process. Constant collaboration with the client and local teams made it possible to adjust the design to each phase of the project, maintaining a clear vision without losing flexibility in the face of the real conditions of the place.

OKAÏ represents for Inusual Studio the possibility of designing spaces that could hardly exist in other contexts. Projects where the limit, far from being a restriction, becomes the creative engine. Designing without destroying, intervening without imposing and building from respect are principles that define this work and will continue to mark the studio’s path in future projects.

Designing for the desert is, above all, learning to listen to the place.
OKAÏ is the result of that dialogue.
